Parent Raises Alarm Over Bullying at Silver Lake Regional Schools
Parent Alleges School's Failure to Address Bullying Led to Self-Harm
KINGSTON, MA – May 16, 2024 – The Silver Lake Regional School Committee meeting on Thursday evening was marked by emotional testimony from a parent alleging the school district failed to address bullying, leading to their child's self-harm. The parent, Pat Harry, detailed a year-long struggle with the school administration, claiming a lack of support and even retaliation against their son.
Harry presented extensive documentation to the committee, including emails and investigation reports, and questioned the school's commitment to providing a safe learning environment. The committee acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and pledged to investigate further.
In other news, the district received a second installment of $66,500 from the Emergency Assistance Shelter Reimbursement Program, bringing the total to over $167,000 for the fiscal year. This funding aims to offset the costs of supporting students living in temporary housing.
The meeting also included updates on academic progress at the middle and high schools, with a focus on the development and implementation of common assessments across various subjects. The data presented showed improvements in several areas, but also highlighted the need for continued efforts to support student achievement.
Additionally, the committee approved a contract for the construction of a two-car garage with a mudroom by the high school's carpentry program. This project, located on White Pine Lane, is seen as a valuable learning opportunity for students and a benefit to the community.
The meeting concluded with a heartfelt farewell to student representative Connor Doyle, who is graduating and will be attending Assumption University in the fall. Doyle was commended for his dedication and advocacy on behalf of his peers.
The next school committee meeting is scheduled for June 6th and will be held virtually.
