Kingston Board of Selectmen Consider Waste Transfer Facility Proposal
Developer, Kingston Environmental Partners, Touts Economic and Environmental Benefits
KINGSTON, MA – May 21, 2024 – The Kingston Board of Selectmen meeting on Tuesday evening introduced a proposal for a new waste transfer facility that could bring significant economic and environmental benefits to the town. The facility, proposed by Kingston Environmental Partners (KEP), would be located off Marion Drive near the train station and would utilize the regional railway system to transport waste out of state.
KEP representatives highlighted the potential for the facility to become one of the largest taxpayers in Kingston, generate additional revenue through tipping fees, and reduce the town's solid waste costs. The project would also involve the construction of a new, paved access road and would operate primarily indoors, minimizing environmental impact.
While the project is still in its early stages, with a lengthy permitting process ahead, KEP expressed their commitment to working collaboratively with the town and addressing community concerns about traffic, noise, and the impact on the existing transfer station.
In other news, the Board of Selectmen underwent reorganization, with Eric Crone taking over as Chair and Tyler Bouchard as Vice Chair. The board also approved the renewal of shellfish aquaculture licenses, razor clam licenses, and one-day liquor licenses for the Grays Beach Music Nights.
Additionally, the town received a second installment of state funding to support students living in temporary housing, bringing the total to over $167,000 for the fiscal year. The board also accepted a donation of 10 cubic yards of mulch from No Fear Landscaping for the upcoming Memorial Day parade.
The meeting concluded with updates on various town projects, including the construction of a new wastewater leaching field, a water main upgrade on Main Street, and repairs to the Landing Road bridge under Route 3. The board also discussed plans for a fall town meeting to address MBTA zoning and other important issues.
