Emotional Farewell to School Committee Chairwoman Cervantes Marks Change for Hanover Schools
Kenton Greene Award Established, Activity Fees Approved, and Superintendent Contract Extended
HANOVER, MA - June 11- In an emotional meeting, the Hanover School Committee bid farewell to Chairwoman Kristen Cervantes and honored the late local scientist Kenton Greene, all while making significant decisions for the district's future.
Cervantes, who is relocating out of Hanover, was recognized for her leadership and dedication. Her children led the Pledge of Allegiance, and colleagues expressed their gratitude for her service, particularly during the successful override campaign and the challenges of the past year. Superintendent Matt Ferron praised Cervantes for fostering a strong team environment within the district.
The committee unanimously approved the establishment of the Kenton W. Greene Award for Excellence in Science and Service to the Community. The award honors Greene, a Hanover native whose scientific contributions included a crucial role in the Apollo moon mission. Greene's family attended the meeting and expressed their appreciation for the recognition of his legacy.
In other business, the committee approved a $75 annual activity fee with a $150 family cap for high school students participating in clubs and activities. Updates to student handbooks across all grade levels were also approved, addressing issues such as academic integrity, technology use, and student health.
Following a positive evaluation, the committee voted to extend Superintendent Ferron's contract through August 31, 2029. Ferron expressed his gratitude for the committee's support and emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in the district.
The meeting concluded with the election of new officers, with Pete Miraglia taking over as chair and Ryan Hall as vice chair. Committee members were also assigned to various roles and committees, ensuring continued engagement and oversight in the district's operations.
