Abington Appoints New Police Chief
Board of Selectmen Unanimously Approves Five-Year Contract for John Bonney
ABINGTON, MA - August 13 - The Abington Board of Selectmen unanimously approves John Bonney as the town's new Chief of Police. Bonney, a 22-year veteran of the Stoughton Police Department, begins his tenure Sept. 9, with a ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for Sept. 10.
Town Manager Scott Lambiase describes the selection process as rigorous, including an assessment center and final interviews. "We actually had some really, really highly qualified candidates. It was a very difficult choice at the end," Lambiase says.
Bonney expresses gratitude and excitement for the opportunity during the board meeting. "I cannot be expressed how grateful I am for this opportunity," he says. "The excitement in that building right now is palpable."
The new chief highlights recent developments within the department, including the appointment of a new deputy chief, two lieutenants, and several sergeants. He also mentions progress on Abington's new public safety campus.
"I couldn't be stepping into a more exciting time for the agency, the town, and my family," Bonney says.
With 22 years of experience in Stoughton, Bonney acknowledges the difficulty of leaving his "second family" but expresses confidence in his transition to Abington. He cites the warm welcome he has received from department members and the community.
"There is an energy and a vibrancy to this town that I feel is going to make my transition very smooth," Bonney says. He adds that he has been actively engaging with the community since learning of his appointment.
The Board of Selectmen's approval of Bonney's five-year contract is unanimous. The contract begins Sept. 9, with the ceremonial swearing-in to follow Sept. 10.
Board members express their support for the new chief, with Chair Kevin Donovan formally welcoming Bonney to the town. The board's vote to support the Town Manager's recommendation is also unanimous.
"I hope to bring that energy to Abington, and I just can't wait to get started," Bonney says.
The meeting also addressed other town business, including the declaration of a surplus ambulance for sale. The 2015 International TerraStar, valued between $10,000 and $15,000, will be sold to the highest bidder through Auctions International.
